Carbon Farming visit with Wij.land

On April 29th the Sustainable & Innovation committee will head towards a dairy-farm in the middle of the Randstad, which is called ‘De Eenzaamheid’ (‘The Solitude’). This farm is located on an island just a 20 minute bike ride away from Leiden. The farm is a regenerative farm where we will spend the afternoon having all sorts of interesting discussions about the future of farming. Think of exploring how farmers can find new revenue streams but also how farms can bring solutions to the climate crisis. We will also talk about topics as reducing carbon, improving water and soil quality and improving biodiversity. 

The farmer himself, with a background in economics and who worked previously for a start-up, will tell us about his ambitions and what his multi-annual vision for his farm looks like. Next to that Wij.land will explain how they work towards landscape restoration in the Dutch western peat meadow area, by (amongst others) supporting farmers in making the transition to regenerative farming. Currently, Wij.land is partner of the Rabo Carbon Bank in the Dutch pilot and will share information about the pilot and how they go about landscape restoration.

Practical information

We will meet each other at the train station Leiden Centraal, from here we will pick an (NS-)bike and bike to the farm.

Do you want to come by car from Utrecht Croeselaan and bring people with you? Let us know, so that we can carpool. There is space near the farm to park your car for free.

Planning

(13:00 - 13:15 arrive at train station for people who come by train, grab OV bikes and start cycling to the assembly location)

13:50 Assemble at location : Zijldijk 11 in Warmond. (tip for people coming with OV bikes from Leiden centraal, avoid the route that leads through Wijkpark Merenwijk because it requires a ferry that is not always there. Instead take the other route that goes via Noorderkwartier and the Praxis Leiderdorp see link). 

14:00 Ferry leaves to the Island where the farm is located. If you miss it you need to convince someone who is already on the farm to paddle with a small boat to come pick you up.

Op 29 april gaat de commissie Duurzaamheid & Innovatie commissie richting een melkveebedrijf midden in de Randstad, genaamd 'De Eenzaamheid'. Deze boerderij ligt op een eiland op slechts 20 minuten fietsen van Leiden. De boerderij is een regeneratieve boerderij waar we de middag zullen doorbrengen met allerlei interessante discussies over de toekomst van de landbouw. Denk aan onderzoeken over hoe boeren nieuwe inkomstenstromen kunnen vinden, maar ook hoe boerderijen oplossingen kunnen bieden voor de klimaatcrisis. Ook gaan we in op onderwerpen als het verminderen van koolstof, het verbeteren van de water- en bodemkwaliteit en het verbeteren van de biodiversiteit.

De boer zelf, met een economische achtergrond en eerder werkzaam bij een start-up, vertelt over zijn ambities en hoe zijn meerjarenvisie voor zijn bedrijf. Daarnaast zal Wij.land uitleggen hoe zij werken aan landschapsherstel in het Nederlandse westelijke veenweidegebied, onder meer door boeren te ondersteunen bij de overgang naar regeneratieve landbouw. Wij.land is momenteel partner van de Rabo Carbonbank en zal informatie delen over de pilot en hoe zij te werk gaan bij landschapsherstel.

Praktische informatie

We ontmoeten elkaar op het treinstation Leiden Centraal, vanaf hier pakken we een (OV-)fiets en fietsen we naar de boerderij.

Wil je met de auto komen vanaf Utrecht Croeselaan en mensen meenemen? Laat het ons weten, zodat we kunnen carpoolen. Er is ruimte in de buurt van de boerderij om de auto te parkeren.

Planning

(13:00 - 13:15 aankomst op treinstation voor mensen die met de trein komen, de OV-fiets te pakken en te fietsen naar de verzamelplaats)

13:50 Verzamelen op locatie : Zijldijk 11 te Warmond. (tip voor mensen die met OV-fietsen uit Leiden Centraal komen, vermijd de route die door Wijkpark Merenwijk loopt omdat er een veerboot nodig is die er niet altijd is. Neem in plaats daarvan de andere route die via Noorderkwartier en de Praxis Leiderdorp gaat, zie link).

14:00 Veerboot vertrekt naar het eiland waar de boerderij zich bevindt. Als je het mist, moet je iemand overtuigen die al op de boerderij is om met een kleine boot te peddelen om je op te halen.
