Drumroll, please… This year’s donations will go to Sencity Festival!
Sencity Festival is a sensory experience festival inspired by the inability or reduced ability to hear music. At Sencity Festival, all programming can be experienced with all your senses, so you can taste, smell, see, and feel the music. This way, they make music accessible to deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences, but it also offers added value for people who can hear. This allows visitors to experience culture equally!
Sencity Festival has a diverse program; in addition to sensory-stimulating music, there is art, handtalks, signed and spoken word, and science to experience. All programming showcases the power of a ‘limitation.’ People from all over the world come to the festival to meet each other here; it is one of the largest events where deaf and hard-of-hearing people see each other again. Characteristic of Sencity Festival is the atmosphere. For both deaf and hearing people, it feels very welcoming where everyone is open to meeting each other.
Sencity Festival relies on funds, which fortunately increasingly recognize both the social and artistic value of the festival. To receive grants for artists, the relevant fund must see them as professional artists. According to funds, this is the case when the artist has completed an art academy. However, many deaf artists have never had that chance; many art academies are not accessible to them. As a result, deaf artists are automatically seen as amateur artists, which means that often they cannot apply for funding for them. This way, they get fewer opportunities to exhibit, and the art sector never becomes accessible. For this reason, they like to raise money for a deaf artist so they can exhibit at Sencity Festival!
